I joined Direction IAS in 2002 for general guidance. I wasn’t really sure about the advantages. But the systematic approach of Direction helped me keep focused in the right direction. The classroom studies helped me in understanding the gist and context of Geography in respect to civil service examinations. I would take this opportunity to thank Ms Neetu Singh in particular for her wise guidance.

About sharing my experience in Civil Service Exams, I would like to say that to get success in the exam is not hard if you follow the right strategy.

Choose the option very carefully. Choosing a scoring subject as geography certainly helps. But your interest in the subject should be the sole criterion.

Your optional subjects are important both for Prelims and main exam. Covering each and every part of the syllabus is very essential for scoring good marks.

I take this opportunity to thank Direction for their dedicated guidance. The best thing about the Direction team is their personal attention to students. I was particularly benefited by the classroom studies and discussions as they provided the constructive intellectual interaction most needed during preparations. I would recommend Direction to any aspirant choosing Geography as an optional. Wishing all the best to the Direction team.

hanks for your help in reaching my desired goal. I especially liked the exam oriented study material prepared after meticulous research. The weekly tests based on the UPSC pattern again helped me keep track of the progress and areas that needed improvement. The classroom guidance by the staff at Direction proved beneficial. Overall, an ideal guidance center... Thanks to team Direction for all the help.

With regards to my suggestions for students appearing for the IAS, I would like the future aspirants to dispel the thought that certain optionals are rewarding and other are dangerous. It is only our interest in the optional and sincere preparation that determines our score in CSF. I had chosen History as my main subject, and instead of going for extreme preparation through long written notes, I concentrated only on fundamental material (NCERT books on History & IGNOU notes). The examination is not testing our academic talents but our ability to put down the right answer to the point raised, logical arguments and lucid presentations. So, I would like the students to remember that. Don’t read too many books, it is only the clarity of perception that is being tested not our academic brilliance.

(My History Score: History I: 168, History 2: 172, Total 340)

My preparation in GS at Direction seems to have worked superbly well. I had put all my answers in bullets and points with lot of subheadings. I had got a GS score of 365 (GS Part I=234/300 & GS Part II= 131/300).

It seems to me from my hindsight, that simply covering the entire GS paper any giving broad coverage to all subjects will get us good GS score.

In essay I have a score of 138/200. I feel that marks I got were due to short presentation (just 7 pages). A dramatic beginning and touching ending are very important for the essay. In my essay on “Civil Servants Neutrality”, I ended the essay by arguing that even though Neutrality is a tough quality to civil servant under trying circumstances. “It (Civil Service is a noble cause & worthy of sacrifice”, and I quoted the work of yesteryear British Collector O’ Malley who said about his work as a District Collector, “The collector has a life of dog, but he knows that he has the work of a Man.”

I feel that instead of a tepid, lukewarm & dull essay, essay with an inspiring, emotional & mind provoking quotes and arguments that are logical can fetch good marks. Presence of mind is important.

Finally, I would conclude that only perseverance would yield success. “Rome was not built in a single day. I we are not able to clear in the 1st attempt, in spite of sincere preparation, Heavens is not lost. Analysing the weakness in our last preparation ( at simply casual musings) would plug the hole in our preparation. I wish them good luck.

First of all I like to congratulate Direction Inst Director, Mrs Neetu Singh for providing wonderful opportunity to share my view with future aspirants.

Direction proved to stand by its name. It directed my efforts in the right direction. I liked the workshops held in the classrooms that definitely helped me in developing a methodical approach towards preparation and understanding the requirements of the exams. The faculty at the Institute is highly professional and well adept with the subjects. Thanks Direction for your timely guidance.

I opted Indian History for prelims, later I came to know that Indian History is not scoring optional for mains, so I changed my optional. But the future aspirants should not do the same mistake as I did. Before choosing the option one should assess his/her area of interest and also consult seniors, teachers, availability of quality guidance and study material on the subjects. The analysis of previous year question paper are very much important.

Prelims: go for extensive study – analyzing a previous year question papers – solving model question papers – choose proper standard text books, Newspaper reading must made important notes for periodic revision.

Mains: require selective, intensive and focused preparation- prepare concised notes – periodic revision is important – took more tests, then only you can analyse yourself clearly manage time.

Interview: Board of Gurubaksha Jagat – I went as 3rd person on that day – the board was cordial and supportive. Board emphasized on my personal opinion and practical answers. Some of the questions are:

  • If you are a IPS officer, how will you forest brigand Veerappan?
  • Why in your state more cine actors are entering politics?
  • If you are an district magistrate, how will you reduce rural – urban disparity?

And also some fact oriented questions like:

  • Who claimed Mt. Everest first?
  • Which is the largest mountain in the world?

Interview was actually kind of personality test.

Eassy: It involves a lot of subjectivity – understanding the topics become very very important – wide reading helps to jot down points.

Express your personal view clearly: it is also one of the scoring area.

The place of preparation does matter. I prepared in Chennai – It is useful for aspirants to get proper atmosphere and easy availability of study materials and guidance. Regular discussions with likeminded friends also reduce your time & preparation. But it should be discussion not to be chatting.

I got through only in my 4th attempt. Failure in the previous attempt shattered all my confidence and my morale was at the lowest. At this time my friends and family stood by me. I realized my mistake and took proper lessons from it.

Determination, smart hard work, consistency and sincere efforts made in the right direction always pay dividends. To fetch good marks one should be different from others in presenting the answers.

One should make failure the stepping-stones to reach the success. Don’t loose heart in failure. Enjoy the process of preparation. Be true to yourself. May god help you to realize your dream!. Best of luck

I would like to thank Director Neetu Singh at Directions for giving me this opportunity to share my experiences with students at institute.

I believe that success in this exam is possible for everybody, provided he mapped out a well crafted strategy. Academic achievement have not much relevance in this examination.

Following are my suggestions for success in this examination:

  • Choose the optional carefully. That does not mean you have to choose only the so-called “popular optionals” Your basic interest in the subject should be sole criterion.
  • For clearing prelims, emphasis should be on the optional. Thorough study of every part of the syllabus is essential. General studies, limited reading will suffice.
  • Instead of reading too many books, concentrate only on few standard textbooks. Contemplate which questions are likely to be asked from prepared areas.
  • Only a general reading is required for scoring well in the GS. Even I suggest instead of reading for GS, devote your time on optional and essay.
  • For scoring handsome marks in essay, constant writing practice is essential. Try to read English novels for enhancing your vocabulary.
  • Your preparation for civil services should be like constant water flow from a spring. Don’t be disheartened with failures.
  • Don’t rely on interview marks for your selection. Interview or the so-called “personality test” is the most irrational and absurd one in UPSC.
  • Never under any illusion that the whole board members are highly knowledgeable. Try to answer their questions as much as possible.
  • Civil services exam is like any other exam. Even I call it an ordinary exam. Never overawed by the bulk of the syllabus. Give everything for this exam and let yourself be an instrument in the hands of destiny.
